Human trafficking has existed for centuries but was only codified globally with the Palermo Protocol (United Nations, Citation2000) and the Trafficking Victim Protection Act in 2000 (Trafficking Victims Protection Act, Citation2000). Since then, there has been tremendous growth in research on human trafficking. The global statistics on trafficking in persons highlight several problematic trends (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime [UNODC], Citation2024).
