The Nunavut government is “giving serious consideration” to declaring a territory-wide suicide crisis, Health Minister John Main said on Monday. One way a “suicide crisis” could be declared is as a public health emergency, Main said in a phone interview. “If a public health emergency [is declared], then there is the ability to acquire or order specific resources to be allocated through the chief public health officer’s purview and through legislation,” he said.

RCMP agree with recommendations from a coroner’s jury to improve police relations with Inuit, but the real challenge is finding a way to actually implement the changes. Last week, a six-member jury considered the circumstances around the death of George Arlooktoo, a Kimmirut man who died by suicide on Feb. 9, 2019, during an interaction with police. The jury made 32 recommendations to RCMP, the Nunavut government, the hamlet and health centre to prevent deaths like this in the future.
