Resembles M. sapuaniana by the presence of several cataphylls and maroon leaf sheaths but differs by floral morphology. M. zinnirahae has single spike (up to 2.) smaller spicoid bracts and ovoid spikes, whereas M. sapuaniana occasionally has 3 spikes with sessile terminal capitulum, larger spicoid bracts and angular spikes.

Moderately robust, shortly stoloniferous perennial herbs; rhizome 2–4 cm long, 8–15 mm diameter. Cataphylls 6–10, elliptic to lanceolate, 7.5–12 x 1.6–2.1 cm, maroon or brownish maroon. Culm 1- to several, erect, lateral, 5–20 cm x 2–4 mm, glabrous, brownish or maroon red. Leaves basal, up to 47.5 cm long; leaf blade oblong or linear oblong, 11–32.5 x 3–7.6 cm, apex abruptly narrowed or cuspidate with cauda c.
