When Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg successfully prosecuted Grimaldi’s pizzeria for wage theft this year, the case made headlines nationwide. The storied New York landmark was home to sordid exploitation, as low-wage immigrant workers sent repeat text messages pleading only for the wages they’d earned: “I need money please,” “Can you pay me today please,” “I sure need money to pay my rent please.”

It's often in the face of imminent defeat that someone's character is tested. Unfortunately for residents of New York's 16th congressional district, Rep. Jamaal Bowman has failed in so many ways that it's been difficult to keep track. Bowman has resorted to a relentless campaign of brazen falsehoods in an effort to hold onto political power. What do a deli in the Bronx, a car wash in Queens and a construction site in Manhattan have in common? These are among the thousands of businesses across the state facing complaints of wage theft, a pernicious practice in which employers refuse to pay workers what they are owed. Every year, New York businesses cheat more than 2 million workers out of over $3.2 billion in wages, a third of which comes from those earning minimum wage.
