This nail-biting footage shows a polar bear chasing after a man armed with a rifle after he apparently opens fire on it before he gets on a snowmobile and drives away at speed, dropping his firearm in the process. A farmer has told of his shock after a mutant two-headed calf was born to one of his cows. The incident took place in Sao Miguel do Guapore, in the Brazilian state of Rondonia, last week. Farmer and veterinarian Lucas Thaler said that the animal was stillborn, adding that he knew something was wrong before the birth, as the foetus was not moving inside the cow. The world’s oldest ant fossil preserved within a 113-million-year-old lump of limestone has been unearthed in a long-forgotten museum collection. Biologists at Sao Paulo University’s Zoology Museum have revealed what is now said to be the oldest ant known to science in a study in the journal Current Biology. The fearsome-looking ant, a member of the Haidomyrmecinae genus, lived in the Cretaceous period surrounded by dinosaur giants like the T-Rex, Triceratops and Velociraptor.

A sarcophagus found buried 20 feet under the church of Saint Nicholas is set to get carbon dating to reveal if it is indeed the final resting place of the Saint who inspired Father Christmas. The sarcophagus was found during excavations at the Church of St Nicholas in the Demre district of Antalya, in Turkey, and remains a mystery. Carbon dating will now reveal whether the sarcophagus is the tomb of the fourth-century Greek bishop St Nicholas, who inspired Father Christmas.

These images show customs officers discovering smuggled reptiles and insects inside packages that were being sent through the post disguised as toys. The incident took place in Shanghai, in China, on 21st March. The footage shows the customs officers opening packages and revealing the rare insects and small reptiles, apparently meant to be sold as exotic pets, inside plastic boxes.
