1 Introduction Anthropogenic pressures are causing shifts in the composition of ecological assemblages (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005; Newbold et al. 2015; Walther et al. 2002). This can lead to declines in ecosystem functioning and impact the benefits that nature provides to people (Cardinale et al. 2012; Mace, Norris, and Fitter 2012). These benefits are often referred to as ecosystem services and they underpin human well-being (WWF 2018; Biggs et al. 2012).

AbstractThe body of ecological literature, which informs much of our knowledge of the global loss of biodiversity, has been experiencing rapid growth in recent decades. The increasing difficulty to synthesise this literature manually has simultaneously resulted in a growing demand for automated text mining methods.
