York Region Public Health is working to combat measles outbreaks, but vaccination rates remain below the threshold needed for widespread herd immunity. Acting medical officer of health Sarah Erdman presented an update on the rise in measles cases in York Region and across Ontario to regional council today. So far, York Region has addressed three confirmed cases, while investigating 75 suspected cases and dealing with 25 exposure sites throughout the region.

York Region Transit riders will be paying more come July 1 as the service moves ahead with a three per cent fare increase. Initially approved as part of York Region’s 2025 budget, the fare hike will raise cash and credit fares by 10 cents, from $4.40 to $4.50 per trip. Riders using PRESTO cards will also see changes, with the adult PRESTO fare going from $4.00 to $4.12 and the youth rate going from $3.10 to $3.19.

Newmarket residents clashed at a public meeting over a proposed 92-unit housing development on Old Main Street. The Pentacore Development proposal was presented up a public meeting June 23. The development, spread across multiple properties between 218-244 Old Main St., would represent intensification on the street currently containing largely single-detached townhomes.

Newmarket mom Justyna Miesowicz said she did not want to send her kids for the last week of school. Her two children attend Notre Dame Catholic Elementary School in Newmarket, in grades 1 and 5. Although classes were still in session, she said the onset of a heat wave over the weekend led her to keep her children home June 23. The lack of air conditioning in the school made the heat too concerning, she said.

York Region has identified three regionally owned properties in Newmarket that could potentially be developed into affordable and emergency housing, while no such sites have been proposed in Aurora. Regional staff presented 14 possible locations for housing to the housing and homelessness committee June 19.
