Supertubos is Portugal’s answer to Pipeline—a wave that barrels hard, breaks shallow, and dishes out more beatdowns than your average Atlantic reef. But it’s not just the power that gives this spot its rep. It’s the consistency, the set-up, and the raw quality of the wave. When Supertubos is firing, it’s easily one of the best beach breaks in Europe. Possibly the world.

Praia de Afife is my star pick for the Costa Verde region. It’s a stunning beach with white sands and a backing of low dunes that are threaded together by sections of the ancient coastal camino route that leads across to Spain. Behind, the lush, forested hills of northern Portugal rise in shades of green. It’s never as busy as spots in southern PT or the Algarve. There’s lots and lots to like. The waves here are pretty reliable but also a bit temperamental.

Praia do Amado is one of the Algarve’s most consistent and celebrated surf beaches. It’s utterly stunning – Think dramatic ochre cliffs, wide golden sands, and dunes of rough heather and heath rising above. But it’s also the fact that the waves are super reliable and the beach can cater to all levels of surfer, depending on season/swell size. It’s now one of the Algarve’s go-to beaches for surf schools, day trippers, and road-tripping surfers coming out of the southern Algarve/Sagres. The spots?
