    There is a genetic condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency which puts people at greater risk for developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—an umbrella term for emphysema and chronic bronchitis. These two conditions cause irreversible damage to the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. AAT deficiency is somewhat rare, with roughly 80,000 to 100,000 people in the U.S. estimated to have this genetic condition.
