    HighlightsViral co-infections in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb)-exposed individuals are potentially a risk factor for tuberculosis (TB) pathogenesis. Some chronic viral infections, such as human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) and cytomegalovirus (CMV), can increase TB risk. However, it is unclear whether different viruses impart unique or shared pathogenic mechanisms. Viruses modulate both systemic and local tissue environments in ways that may increase the TB risk.
