Hong Kong could hand debuts to as many as five players in the Asia Rugby Women’s Championship this month, something head coach Lewis Wilson said highlighted the “really exciting” potential for the game in the city. With several senior squad members, including Natasha Olson-Thorne, either injured or resting after an intense sevens season, Wilson said some fringe players had made “absolutely amazing progress” over the past several months.

World Rugby said the changes to its sevens competition were designed to secure the sport’s financial future and grow its global reach ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Confirming it was slashing the number of teams in the World Series from 12 to eight, and installing a six-team second division, the sport’s governing body also said regular tournaments would be cut from three days to just two.

World Rugby plans to slash the number of teams in the sevens World Series to just eight, all but ending Hong Kong’s slim hopes of ever joining the elite of the game. In a radical overhaul of the sport, rugby bosses are also understood to have created a second division of six teams, playing three tournaments, starting in the 2025-26 season and reportedly staying in place until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
