A woman has been taken to hospital after being struck by lightning during severe thunderstorms in South Australia's south east overnight. Emergency services were called to Rocky Camp just before 10pm, following reports of an electrocution. The SA Ambulance Service said the 36-year-old was struck by lightning near Millicent during the storm and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Dry lightning across South Australia's South East overnight also sparked close to 100 fires.

Dry lightning across South Australia's South East overnight has sparked close to 100 fires, including one that has burned 21,000 hectares so far. Country Fire Service Region 5 Commander Jason Druwitt said crews have responded to more than 100 incidents in total, including fallen trees and powerlines struck by lightning, since 4pm yesterday.

South Australia's Country Fire Service says a blaze burning through dense scrub in the state's south-east could turn serious, ahead of forecast hot weather this weekend. The fire at Joanna, around 15 kilometres south of Naracoorte, has so far burned through 44 hectares of scrub since it started on Wednesday afternoon. A watch and act message urging residents to leave was activated on Wednesday afternoon but was later downgraded to an advice message which is still active.

Growers say more people are buying cut or potted Christmas trees than a few years ago. Perceived sustainability and lower costs in some areas are contributing to the trend. Used trees can be cut up and used as mulch. For seven-year-old Teddy, picking out his family's Christmas tree is one of the most exciting parts of preparation for the big day. "Getting a Christmas tree means you're just getting into the Christmas feel," he said.
