The egg shortage has been considered a possible motive for the theft of a number of chickens from a flock at a Hobart college. A teacher at the school says students there are "upset" and hope "nothing untoward has happened with them", with the school urging those who have taken the birds to return them. Nyrstar says its Hobart-based zinc smelter will start to reduce production by a quarter from next month amid the company's financial losses and "deteriorating market conditions". It says there will be no "immediate" job losses from the reduction at the more than 100-year-old smelter that employs about 550 people. The company says it will keep "the flexibility to lift production levels" back up again if market and company financial conditions improve.
