    Bienvenue to our new prime minister. Mark Carney won the election largely because of Quebecers’ massive support. This despite his often-described “mediocre” French that came under attack throughout the campaign. Yet strangely, Carney’s harshest language critics were mostly English-speaking commentators and viewers, while francophones were more accepting and even complimentary. The difference reflects much about living in two languages in Quebec. For starters, Carney’s French was never that bad.

    It’s only eight months till Montreal’s election, but the biggest city issue of our times is being hidden from sight before we get a chance to vote on it. Closing the mountain road. City hall has begun awarding more than $90 million in construction contracts to close off the eastern side of Mount Royal to cars and buses — before the November election. Under the city’s plan, all that would remain of the car route, Camillien-Houde Way, is a cycling lane and pedestrian hiking path.

To my shock I learned he had died hours earlier. So I skipped my connecting flight home minutes before it left and stayed for the coming funeral, while my baggage moved on, including all my clothing other than my jeans and T-shirt.
