California’s governor and perpetual presidential aspirant, Gavin Newsom, recently made news by urging the state’s local officials to cruelly and pointlessly roust homeless people from their makeshift camps across one of the nation’s most homeless states. Except that it wasn’t exactly news, because blaming homeless people and cities and counties for his shortcomings have been relentlessrefrains of Newsom’s more than six years in office.

Dating from my first failed interview, it took me about a decade to get a job at the Los Angeles Times. “That’s the top of the heap!” an old colleague said when I was finally hired. Indeed, in the context of my career and those of many other journalists, the Times could fairly be called the pinnacle. And now, just two years later, I’ve jumped off.
