Dating from my first failed interview, it took me about a decade to get a job at the Los Angeles Times. “That’s the top of the heap!” an old colleague said when I was finally hired. Indeed, in the context of my career and those of many other journalists, the Times could fairly be called the pinnacle. And now, just two years later, I’ve jumped off. This wasn’t out of an idiosyncratic impulse to end my long legacy media career and start one of Substack’s most obscure newsletters.
