Drilling results from the Pinnacles Mine near Broken Hill, owned by Broken Hill Mines and the Williams family, have yielded promising signs. Samples indicating high-grade zinc, lead and silver relatively close to the surface have been sent away for further testing. A resources analyst says the tests are "only scraping the surface" and more exploration work is likely. A partnership between a Broken Hill family and an Australian mining company is attempting to re-inject life into an old mine.

While Broken Hill residents are accustomed to the clockwork daily rumblings underfoot of mine blasts, this was different. In less than 30 hours, three separate earthquakes were recorded within 100 kilometres of the outback mining city in far west New South Wales. A 2.6 magnitude earthquake struck the region just before midnight on Friday, followed by a 4.1 magnitude quake at 2.50pm on Saturday and a 3.3 magnitude tremor at 5.30am today.

It is a Wednesday evening and Darryl Whitelaw, owner of Broken Hill Gourmet Meats, has served the last of his customers for the day. Just before he does his final check of the shop and counts the takings, Mr Whitelaw vacuum packages one last piece of beef. His is one of only two butcher shops left in the Far West New South Wales mining town. The third closed in late 2023 and despite a sign saying it would reopen this year, it remains shut.
