A city-run school system for Montgomery?

Leaders of Alabama’s capital city are apparently ready to explore creating their own school system. Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed told APR on Monday that legislation should be coming this week that would allow Montgomery to start a city-operated school system, abandoning the beleaguered county system that has drawn the ire of many residents, city officials and business leaders. “It’s needed. It’s necessary,” Reed said of a city-operated system.
Alabama's medical cannabis licensing gets reset — again

The medical cannabis licensing process in Alabama has been reset once again. Montgomery Circuit Court Judge James Anderson on Monday afternoon ruled invalid the use of an emergency rule which the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission utilized in order to award licenses in December 2023. With that ruling, the court also tossed out the integrated and dispensary licenses that the Commission had awarded but not yet issued, effectively starting the process over from the beginning.

Montgomery school board moves forward with controversial superintendent selection

The Montgomery Public School system has a new superintendent, much to the chagrin of city and county leaders and a good chunk of the public. Dr. Zickeyous Byrd was the Montgomery County School Board’s selection, picking up four votes on the seven-person board and edging out Harold Wright. Byrd’s selection followed weeks of turmoil surrounding the search process and months of turmoil starting with the controversial resignation of former superintendent Melvin Brown.

There’s a whole swath of people in this state who will, after June 30, be taxed more and making less money every week.

Another gambling bill has faltered and failed in the Alabama Legislature. While I’m not completely convinced that gambling is a dead issue for the 2025 legislative session – we’ve seen the issue rise, zombie-like, from the grave many times before, and with far less than a month to go – the first few shovels of dirt have definitely landed on the coffin. And that, of course, leads us to the inevitable next step in the annual gambling-got-oh-so-close process. The blame game.
