Can we all agree that this situation with John Wahl is strange? We can do that, right? Republicans, Democrats, independents – we all should be able to come together on this one. Not that he’s strange, mind you. I make no judgment on that topic. Nor do I make any judgments on his religion, his beliefs or his occupation – the same way I wish he’d behave towards others. But the situation, on the other hand …. It’s strange that we don’t really – I mean, really – know exactly who this guy is.

Do you know what’s very popular in Alabama? Gambling. And public school funding. And the overtime tax exemption. There is no arguing this. These three things are some of the most popular issues on an Alabama voter’s mind. Poll after poll has proven this, and done so year after year. You know what’s not so popular in Alabama? Denying voters the right to vote on gambling. And sending public school dollars to private businesses. And repealing the overtime tax exemption. Again, it’s not a close call.

Welcome to Alabama, where regressing 12 years is actually progress. On Thursday, a federal three-judge panel ruled that state lawmakers here had been so unapologetically racist in drawing their congressional voting maps – and then so cavalierly defiant when told to correct their racism – that the court could see no way that it couldn’t be exactly what it appeared to be: Blatant racism. That, of course, is no surprise.

Alabama Democrats smell blood in the water. And a very familiar face is helping to lead the attack. Over the past several weeks, as the Trump administration’s scandals, poor decisions, arbitrary firings and general ineptitude have confused and angered voters across the country, a not-so-odd thing has happened – Democrats have suddenly become much more popular. Even in blood-red Alabama.

Republicans’ attacks on the poor are set to reach a new low in coming weeks, as a Trump-backed spending bill takes a massive bite out of food assistance programs that feed the nation’s poorest citizens. U.S. House Republicans want to overhaul the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in an effort to trim the USDA budgets by at least $230 million.
