The medical cannabis debacle continues. In a theme that has become way too common, a representative from the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission was before the Alabama Legislature’s Contract Review Committee on Thursday asking for more money to pay lawyers. So far, the attorneys are the only ones to benefit from the legislature’s decision in 2021 to pass medical cannabis legislation. Going on five years later, we have yet to provide a single patient with actual cannabis.

Government is not bad. Repeat that to yourself over and over. Say it out loud. Stand in front of the mirror and watch yourself say it until you believe it. Because it’s true, and it’s way, way past time that people stop holding the thoroughly ignorant, self-harming belief that government, as a whole, is bad. Or wasteful. Or intrusive. Or incompetent. Oh, to be certain, there are portions of government that are all of those things. But they exist at the micro level.

Monday was Jefferson Davis in Alabama, and thank God for that. If there’s one thing this state needs – and that many states need – at this point in American history is a solid reminder of the legacy and actions of the confederacy’s only president. And the consequences that can befall the rise of such a shallow, inept, greedy and incompetent man. To be clear, Jefferson Davis was all of those things and then some.
