Trinity and Pleasure Ridge Park’s showdown Saturday afternoon at Kentucky Proud Park, objectively, would have been the greatest state title bout played between two Louisville schools. That’s because it was the first. That they shared in one of the event’s finest battles, period, was a gift from the baseball gods. Trinity persevered 2-1 after nine innings to cap the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Baseball State Tournament and affirm its ranking as the state’s No. 1 team through most of the season.

Moments after he thought a called strike would end the game, Gray Davis watched Boyd County’s Caleb Gray put a ball into play — threatening to extend the contest and end his no-hit bid. As Davis’ eyes followed a high-hopper he watched his third baseman, Grayson Willoughby, rush toward the middle of the infield, corral and deliver the tricky ball to first to propel Trinity to the championship round of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Baseball State Tournament at Kentucky Proud Park.

Frank Conley felt no fear sending Alex Maynard home for what became the deciding run in Boyd County’s 2-1 win over Wolfe County in the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Baseball State Tournament quarterfinals Sunday. “When I saw that left fielder turn, I was sending him,” said Conley, who has guided the Lions since 2019. “If he gets thrown out, he gets thrown out, but we’re gonna push that.”Maynard scored from first on a deep shot to left by Brayden Coleman.

Boyd County and Wolfe County’s showdown in the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Baseball State Tournament moved at a brisk pace while it was actually contested. Three rain delays — a 20-minute stoppage right after the first half-inning, an hour-and-five-minute delay early in the top of the third, and a final one starting at 11:13 p.m. — marred what was shaping up to be an exciting quarterfinal at Kentucky Proud Park.

Scott County ace Ada Little had a no-hitter going through four innings but her team trailed 2-1. Such is life sometimes in the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Softball State Tournament. Little in the top of the fifth finally gave up her first of three hits but the No. 5 Cardinals also found home plate down the stretch. They squeezed out a 3-2 win over No. 14 Bullitt East in the first round late Thursday night, setting up a quarterfinal showdown with Rowan County on Saturday morning at UK’s John Cropp Stadium.
