The New Jersey Devils headed into Sunday night’s clash with the San Jose Sharks soaring from an overtime victory Saturday night over the New York Islanders. On the Island, the Devils erased a two-goal deficit with less than five minutes to play on goals from Dawson Mercer and Stefan Noesen and then won the game on a Jack Hughes breakaway goal. Tonight, the team needed the same heroics, but they did not come as they were blanked by the San Jose Sharks 1-0.

The New Jersey Devils needed a good performance on home ice, and as they packed their bags to head to Western Canada, they had one remaining chance for a positive sendoff. That chance came in a matchup with the Anaheim Ducks, which went almost perfectly to plan. The Devils got good goaltending, played fast, smart hockey, built a lead and added on, and finally put on a dominating performance on home ice.

The New Jersey Devils did not expect to begin the season without Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce, two elite defensemen slated for top-four minutes. Next came the injury to their expected seventh defenseman, Santeri Hatakka, and the team had to resort to playing the first eight games of the schedule with a pair of right-shot defensemen who came into the season with a combined age of 40 and a combined 60 NHL games to their credit.

More than most, the New Jersey Devils’ game Saturday night against the Washington Capitals was a true microcosm of their season. Flashes of brilliance, success when they forecheck, inability to score off the rush, and excellent penalty killing. Unfortunately for New Jersey, the brilliance exhibited in the first five minutes of the game and the opening 45 seconds of the second period was overshadowed by the inability to get clean exits and maintain coverage structures.
