U.S. president Donald Trump has issued an executive order calling for an investigation into American imports of critical minerals. The order gives Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick 90 days to hold a probe into whether the U.S. is overly reliant on imports of the minerals, including those from Canada.

While Canada supplies 50 to 80 per cent of the U.S.’s needs for several critical minerals, such as zinc, tellurium, nickel and vanadium, the most dominant country in global production for the minerals America needs is China. The Canadian government says a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian critical minerals would cause the U.S. to become increasingly reliant on China for products such as nickel, zinc and germanium.

By mid-afternoon Tuesday, Alliston could finally exhale after learning that Honda Canada is keeping full production at its local plant “for the foreseeable future.”The collective sigh of relief came in the wake of a Japanese newspaper report earlier in the day that Honda was considering shifting production to the U.S. to avoid auto tariffs.
