The Conservative Party “will never” risk economic stability with unfunded tax cuts like those in Liz Truss’ mini-budget, the shadow chancellor declared in a speech this morning. The address, delivered by Mel Stride, marks the clearest repudiation yet of the failed former prime minister, by the party that elected her leader in 2022. “For a few weeks, we put at risk the very stability which Conservatives had always said must be carefully protected”, the shadow chancellor conceded.

An apparent split has emerged within Reform UK after the party’s newest MP, Sarah Pochin, called for a ban on burqas in Britain “in the interests of public safety”. The new MP, who won the recent Runcorn and Helsby by-election with a margin of just six votes over Labour, asked her first question at PMQs on Wednesday. She called on the prime minister to “follow the lead of France, Denmark, Belgium and others” in banning the burqa.

Badenoch has shown little sign of improvement at the despatch box since emerging as Conservative leader in November last year. But this afternoon, contrary to her crystallising reputation for commons missteps, she succeeded in making the prime minister look uncomfortable.
