Grant Hardin's escape from the North Central Unit and the ensuing manhunt for the fugitive have placed a national spotlight on Arkansas, but it is far from the first attention-grabbing breakout in Arkansas history. Hardin, the so-called "Devil in the Ozarks," fled the prison at Calico Rock on May 25, by donning an outfit the state Department of Corrections said was designed to "mimic law enforcement" and escaping using an area designated for bringing detainees into a lockup.
