I suppose the decision to keep the word “cash,” in the third couplet, which always felt like the organic choice in that spot, though it wasn’t clear to me at first whether it would work in concert with the rest of the poem’s pitch (we open with the eternal, for example, and then end with the interstellar scale of the last stanza).

Forum selection clauses. Arbitration and dispute resolution provisions. Choice of law requirements. These procedural provisions, once enforced by a court, often make the greatest difference in a case’s outcome.

There is no doubt lots of people consider modern music... horrid. I am in this camp as most of the songs I hear on the radio use the same beats, and mention the same topics and length; it is as if music is no longer inspiring and the poor horse is being beaten into glue.

Smith begins the audiobook with a strong, clear delivery of the foreword, followed by Jesse McCarthy and Joshua Bennett, who share the introduction. When we enter the worlds of the poets, the deliveries are varied in tempo, tone, rhythm, and pitch.

As I read Watch Your Language (Penguin, 2023) and So To Speak (Penguin, 2023), Terrance Hayes’s new books, I found myself thinking about freedom. Both books frame creativity as a lifelong practice that can lead to a kind of liberation. Hayes recalls his time playing basketball as a teen and then in college to reverse the usual hierarchy between practice versus the game.
