i maintain that the first 100 or so minutes of this is one of the greatest films ive ever seen. just masterful storytelling, incredibly stunning visually, intimate, humorous, historically astute as a period piece. so enjoyable and refreshing, with a wondrous score/soundtrack. i love the vampire storyline but would be lying if i said there wasn’t a part of me that could see this going to even greater heights if the film did not have to include the more violent or action-based aspects of the story.

watched this for research for a piece i’m working on, and wow. this didn’t teach me much that i didn’t already know. but i still find myself stunned by such casual depravity. specifically with regard to the vigilante/deputized extremist settlers who manage to have some level of influence on israel’s governing body—who do not even see the far-right policy of the current administration as viable or working fast enough to disappear or rather exterminate any semblance of palestinian life.

obsessed with that ending, where there’s a glimpse of hope that the ‘good guys’ actually won and it almost immediately ripped away in the most straightforwardly bleak, horrifying, but realistic way possible. it truly could not end any other way. just masterful, stylish, hilarious, and brilliant. implicating ordinary people into class traitorship by manipulating and appealing to their common needs.
