One hurricane on top of another. Communities battered from Florida to North Carolina to Alabama. Billions in damages, and even that is only able to capture a fraction of the devastation. Well over 200 lives have been lost, and people are still missing. In the middle of it all, neighbors are helping one another, donations are flowing in from around the country, and people are practicing mutual aid on a scale that emerges in the wake of disaster.

Multiple NYPD cops shot at a man named Derell Mickles after he evaded the subway fare Sunday afternoon. They followed him at length for skipping out on $2.90, followed him onto the train, and eventually drew their weapons and repeatedly fired at Derell, injuring him along with one of their fellow officers and two other people. Video shows a bloodied man lying on the floor of a subway car with his hands handcuffed behind his back.

Right now we’re in one of the most dangerous moments for migrants in decades. Proud Boys marched in Springfield, Ohio this weekend, and Haitian migrants have woken up to find their windows broken. Bomb threats closed two elementary schools and a middle school last week, parents are keeping their kids home, and the Republican Party along with the far-right media apparatus is bringing the town to the edge of a pogrom.

The punch heard round the world in record time was dealt by Algeria’s Imane Khelif, and it landed right on the nose of Italian boxer Angela Carini. The Olympic fight ended after just 46 seconds with Carini breaking down in tears and opting out. Almost instantaneously the right-wing echo chamber labeled Khelif a man, called her trans, and ran with the lie.

The shocking fact that Chick-fil-A runs what they call a “summer camp” has been circulating on just about every social media platform. The camp is really a brief experience where parents pay the giant fast-food corporation in order to have their children visit one of the locations and spend a morning learning a few things. Namely, Chick-fil-A says that kids will get the immense privilege of learning a little about how to serve customers.

Everyone from Joe Biden to Anthony Blinken to numerous members of Congress and prominent politicians across the West are calling on Hamas to accept the latest Israeli-U.S. ceasefire proposal. And, even if we set aside the fact that Hamas proposed a remarkably similar plan nearly four months ago, there is a still bigger problem here. Netanyahu and his government are refusing to accept the very premise of a permanent ceasefire.

An odd trio has been bouncing around my head for the past few days. The first item of the three is a little interaction I had two weeks ago. My partner and I were visiting friends, and they had a few people over for dinner. Another couple we had never met was there, and we got to talking. Turns out they build houses. Naturally, I couldn’t help but ask about how much their homes sell for these days, and eventually we got around to something truly unbelievable.

I know you’ve heard about Harrison Butker by now, and his embarrassment of a commencement speech at Benedictine College. You’ve probably seen the NFL kicker roasted six ways from Sunday for his misogyny, hypocrisy, and regressive nonsense. People have already written about his stupidity, everyone has memed his nonsense, and conservatives have applauded him for advocating for a return to the 1950s. That is exactly what he was doing, unashamedly.

Morning my angels!! How are you??? I had a $7.50 oat flat white yesterday AND I got to see Slam Dunc (who paid) so I’m… good, I guess? I don’t have much else to fill you in on except that I’m still deep in my Desperate Housewives era, and (for the OGs) I’m back sleeping in my old room in Auckland for the week (in the house I used to live in with Flo!!!) and it’s so weird and cute. Maybe even a bit nostalgic?
