Local newspapers have long played a critical role in American public life, far beyond their ability just to keep people informed about their communities and the wider world: they provide a cultural glue to knit strangers together through a shared, common narrative about the place in which they live.

In 2023, many public discussions about the future of American democracy centered on increasing the supply of local news. The situation is certainly dire: By the end of 2024, Northwestern’s Local News Initiative predicts that the United States will have lost one-third of its newspapers since 2005.
