Last week saw our winter service team battle with the consistent freezing temperatures, which in some areas reached as low as -8 degrees. Our fleet of 10 gritters – that are on standby 24-hours a day, seven days a week – took to the roads to help keep motorists safe every day throughout the week and will continue to do so as long as is needed. In excess of 1,200 tons of salt was used on precautionary routes, secondary routes, critical assets and salt bin replenishment.

Texas Representative Tony Gonzales (R) won his primary battle against challenger Brandon Herrera. In the close election, Rep. Gonzales, considered by some to be a moderate Republican, was able to overcome his more controversial opponent who is an ardent gun rights activist. Rep. Gonzales has pushed for safer gun laws after the tragic shooting that took place in Uvalde, TX. In the shooting, a gunman killed 21 people—19 students and two adults.

In a 9-0 ruling, the United States Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) unanimously sided with the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) complaint that a New York official had infringed upon their First Amendment right to free speech. Former New York State Department of Financial Services superintendent Maria Vullo is accused of attempting to coerce businesses to not work with the NRA.

President Donald Trump has been found guilty by a jury of his peers on all 34 felony charges. In the case, the 12-member jury came to the required unanimous verdict. Trump was accused of falsifying documents in an attempt to cover up a “hush money” payment to an adult film actress. The case spanned multiple weeks, with even the jury selection process taking an extended period of time.

Judge Aileen Cannon recently dismissed Jack Smith’s request for a gag order against the defendant, Donald Trump (R). In the case, Trump has been accused of illegally taking hundreds of classified documents from the White House after he was no longer president. Prosecutors are supposed to confer with the defense before filing a gag order. However, Smith decided not to do so and, instead, filed on a Friday leading to a three-day weekend—a move that has been questioned and criticized.

Texas Republicans have found their challenger, Jay Furman, to compete, in a runoff, for Texas Representative Henry Cuellar’s (D) congressional seat. Furman is a navy veteran and will battle Rep. Cuellar in Texas' 28th Congressional District. Cuellar has been fighting a separate battle, as he and his wife are facing charges stemming from allegations that they took close to $600,000 in bribes from two foreign entities. The alleged actions took place over a seven-year span, from 2014 to 2021.
