Pupils of two primary schools in Ibanda District are studying under trees after wind deroofed their classroom blocks. Three classroom blocks at Mushunga Primary School in Ishongororo Sub-county and Kemihoko Primary Schools in Ishongororo Town Council were deroofed last week, forcing learners to study under trees. Mushunga Primary School, with a total population of 532 learners, had three classroom blocks and one block was hit by a storm recently.

Ankole residents have turned to a marathon to combat the high HIV prevalence in the sub-region. According to the Uganda Aids Commission’s (UAC) 2024 report, 10 of the 13 districts in Ankole have higher HIV prevalence rates than the national average of 5.1 percent. Mbarara City leads with 11.1 percent, followed by Bushenyi at 9.1 percent, Kiruhura at 8.9 percent, and Mbarara and Rwampara both at 7.8 percent.

A double tragedy unfolded in Rushambya village, Kashozi Sub-County, Ibanda District, when a woman killed her husband and was subsequently murdered by an angry mob. The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 2:00 PM, with the victims identified as 35-year-old Amos Gumikiriza Ntagyenda and 34-year-old Justine Kyotungire. It is suspected that their love turned sour following a misunderstanding, as the husband used earnings sent by his wife, who had worked abroad, to marry another woman.

There is growing concern over the increasing number of cases of mentally challenged people on the streets of Mbarara City. One cannot walk on a street in the city without meeting a mentally challenged person. Dr Thomas Kabagambe, the principal psychiatry officer at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, said since the year began, they have received 751 new mentally ill cases and every month, they receive between 120 and 140 patients.

The recently released HIV/Aids report indicates that the disease prevalence in most districts in Ankole Sub-region is higher than the national rate of 5.1 percent. Mbarara is leading the 13 districts of Ankole with 14 percent, followed by Kiruhura (9.5 percent), Bushenyi (9.2 percent), Mbarara City (8.1 percent) and Ibanda at 7.3 percent. Sheema is 7.5 percent, Rubirizi is 6.1 percent, and Ntungamo is 5.9 percent. However, Mitooma has 4.7 percent, Buhweju 3.8 percent and Isingiro 3.1 percent.
