Hortensia Ortiz still lives in Famaillá, a small city in Tucumán south of the provincial capital of San Miguel. It’s a suburban house a little over five kilometers from La Fronterita (The Little Border), the sugar mill she fondly remembers as the backdrop of her early childhood. Surrounded by her family in the dining room, she brews mate as she shares memories of going to school and making stuffed dolls under the watchful eye of her mother Isabel.

Last July, a group of La Libertad Avanza lawmakers paid a prison visit to Alfredo Astiz and other dictatorship-era repressors. Perhaps the most ingenious explanation came from Deputy Lourdes Arrieta“We were tricked into going,” she claimed, adding that she had no idea who these men were. Her assertion was met with skepticism. The 1976-1983 dictatorship years are part of every high school curriculum.

Eva Perón had been sick for a number of years. Fainting, severe weight loss, and chronic fatigue — by the late 1940s, she needed an aide constantly by her side. Her condition forced her to resign the vice presidential nomination for her husband Juan Domingo Perón’s 1952 reelection campaign, much to the great disappointment of her supporters who considered her the heart and soul of Peronism.

Argentine President Javier Milei has never been shy about his admiration for the United States. On the campaign trail he called it a “model” for economic freedom and repeatedly singled it out as the country he most intended to strengthen ties with. As president, he has traveled there six times, making it by far the country he has visited most. While his trips show that he is prioritizing relations with the U.S., they also reveal that he is not above picking sides.

Wrote about the struggle in Tucumán to get justice for sugar cane workers, the largest group to be slaughtered before and during the 1976-1983 dictatorship

Sugar magnates let the army hunt their workers. Fifty years later, will they finally stand trial? ✍️ @yaesmucho https://t.co/lxuVG3VWo8

I wrote about what's at stake for Milei in the US election. His expectation is that a new Trump administration could help open the doors to fresh funds from the IMF and also cement his status as a far-right icon. But predicting what Trump might actually do is anyone's guess

Milei is all in for Trump. Is that a sound bet? His preferences in the US elections are no secret, but the Republican candidate's unpredictable nature may come back to haunt him ✍️ @yaesmucho https://t.co/n8GWGSoZcR
