One of the funniest “rock life” stories I’ve heard is when China Kantner Isler — who I first became aware of when she was a VJ on MTV back in the ’80s — told me what it was like being a teenager and getting picked up after school by her famous mother, Grace Slick. “She would show up in her DeLorean with the gull-wing doors, and she’d have crazy hair and knee-high boots,” says Isler, “and I’d be like, ‘Mom! Go away.

20 years ago, back in 2003, Guitar Player sat down with Angus and Malcolm Young to look back over their career. Prompted by AC/DC's induction in that year's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame it became a funny and insightful trip through their back catalog, made all the more poignant today with Malcolm Young's death back in 2017. In many ways, it was a normal night for AC/DC.

Jonathan Gold, who dedicated his life to working with the disabled, died peacefully on July 14. He was 79. Described by friends as a poet and “eternal scholar,” Jonathan was born on Nov. 3, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York. His later youth was spent in Manhattan, where he and his older brother, Jeremy, mostly stayed out of trouble growing up on the Lower East Side.

A few yearsago, while in rehearsals with his band, Red Dragon Cartel, revered hard rocker Jake E. Lee decided to try out a new amp that had recently shown up at his studio: a Friedman Smallbox 50. According to the amp’s maker, Los Angeles guitar gear guru Dave Friedman, the Ozzy-pedigreed shredder immediately fell in love with the head and proceeded to use it every night of his ensuing tour.
