We are justly proud of all those who generously give up their time and energy to run, walk, row across oceans or jump out of aeroplanes to support their favourite charity. Despite the financial straits in which the country finds itself, a whopping £13.9 billion was raised in 2023.

Following surgery, my husband has to take regular medication, which - like so many currently - is in short supply and, at the moment, only available from the hospital pharmacy. We are fortunate to live in a city with public transport, so collecting the prescription is easy. However, this is not so for everyone.

So many charities identify dedicated awareness and fund-raising months, weeks or days. My own charity, Esme’s Umbrella, uses 16 November as its awareness day for Charles Bonnet Syndrome. Looking at the whole list of health conditions, I became aware of just how many of these are linked to one charity - Medical Detection Dogs (MDD).
