There is a classic New Yorker cartoon by Bob Mankoff that shows a man talking on the phone and looking over his datebook. He says to the person on the other end of the line, “No, Thursday’s out. How about never? Is never good for you?”Sometimes I feel as though I’m living in that cartoon. It’s often difficult to connect with my friends, even for a walk. One is off to Florida for three months. Another is busy caring for grandchildren. Another is tied up with work.

For a few hours last week, our fractious world united as one, awaiting word of who would become the next leader of the Catholic Church. Television stations across the globe interrupted their regular programming, demonstrating Catholicism’s vast reach. Earlier this month, I guided a retreat at the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Retreat Center outside of Bardstown, Kentucky. I always ask everyone at the end to share an insight that came to them. One woman said the retreat reminded her of the importance in life of tenderness. Tenderness. It was an interesting choice of words rather than, say, kindness or mercy. How is tenderness different? Kindness is often a reflex action. A person drops something and we reflexively reach down to help pick it up.

Pope Francis has written and spoken many memorable words. He likely will be remembered most for one particular line. Todos, todos, todos. Everyone, everyone, everyone. The church should be for everyone. He said it to the young people at World Youth Day in 2023, asking them to repeat the words after him. He said it at a press conference, and he said it in an interview on American TV. The church certainly has a way to go in this regard. A church for everyone means a hierarchy that includes women.

I ask, what have we become as a nation? Our country needs to do a great deal of soul searching. https://t.co/o48WlA0KIK #2024Election

What if we really heeded Jesus' words in the gospels as we cast our vote this November? Could we then seriously vote for Donald Trump? #Election2024 #spirituality #ChristianFaith #ChristianNationalism #CatholicTwitter @VP @realDonaldTrump https://t.co/XTVoHcSxmn

Today I leave to guide a pilgrimage in Italy & will remain there for an extended period. I leave with a renewed sense of hope for the U.S. as I explain in 'Putting the 'Us' Back Into The U.S.' Hope you feel the same. #Election2024 #politics #Italy https://t.co/qCmZVyDUfz
