A section of Loewen Boulevard will look quite different with older structures being replaced by new buildings. Steinbach City Council has approved a variance application to reduce the site width for a proposed multi-family development at the corner of Loewen and Henry Street, but denied a request to reduce the corner yard setback. Council also approved a rezoning application to change the property at 286 Henry Street from Residential Low Density (RLD) to Residential Medium Density (RMD).

The City of Steinbach has elevated its Fire Danger Index to Level 2 as dry conditions and strong winds increase the risk of grass fires. The city announced the change in a news release early Thursday evening, stating that the restrictions are in effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice. Under Level 2, no controlled burns are permitted, no burn permits will be issued, and all current permits are suspended. Fireworks are also prohibited within city limits.

The Jake Epp Library in Steinbach will increase its non-resident membership fees from $110 to $165 per year, starting July 1. The decision, announced at Tuesday’s Steinbach City Council meeting, comes as the library faces rising costs for wages and book purchases. Addressing rising costs Councillor Jac Siemens, the city’s representative on the Jake Epp Library Board, said the increase is necessary to help cover the growing expenses of running the library.

Steinbach Community Outreach is raising money this spring through a coffee house. Coffee for a Cause takes place this evening, May 8th at Brentwood Hall. “All the funds raised at this fundraiser go towards supporting our ongoing programming,” says Executive Director Charlene Kroeker. “So this is supporting Today House, the homeless shelter that we run. This is going to support our drop-in center, which is the hub for accessing all of our programming.

Steinbach City Council has approved a proposal that will see Ste. Anne Police working alongside Steinbach RCMP to target unsafe driving behaviour in the city. The initiative, funded by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), will provide additional traffic enforcement through overtime hours for officers, with a focus on Main Street and other areas where speeding and reckless driving have been reported.
