    Steinbach city council has approved a resolution to apply for more than $66 million in federal funding to help pay for major wastewater infrastructure upgrades. The application will be submitted through the direct delivery stream of the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF), a federal program designed to support municipal infrastructure related to housing growth. The total estimated cost of the project is $132,475,000.

    The City of Steinbach is working to make housing more affordable by allowing more apartment buildings and multi-unity homes to be built through rezoning decisions. At a recent city council meeting, Mayor Earl Funk suggested that it could work well for Steinbach to grow outward as well as upward. Constructing taller buildings to make better use of land while also encouraging more development toward the outer areas of the city.

Each spring, the City designates its bylaw officer as the official noxious weeds inspector. Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra says while most Steinbach property owners maintain their yards well, there are rules in place to ensure everyone does their part to prevent unsightly overgrowth.

    Steinbach’s junior curlers closed out the 2024-25 season with strong performances at two major events in Winnipeg — the Curl Canada RockFest skills competition and the annual junior season wind-up bonspiel. The Curl Canada RockFest Man-Sask event wrapped up Saturday after three days of competition. Nearly 100 U15 curlers from across the Prairies gathered for the individual skills challenge, and Steinbach had seven curlers qualify for the event.

    Southern Manitoba is getting a spring preview this weekend, with sunshine and mild temperatures expected through Saturday — but rain, wind and even a touch of snow could return by Sunday night. Stephen Berg, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says the warm-up is thanks to a front that moved in from the west. “A warm front just came over the southern part of the province from west to east,” said Berg.
