On December 20, Lee Lakeman, one of Canada’s greatest feminists passed away after weeks in palliative care. I met Lee when I was President of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC) in the early 1990’s. NAC was an extraordinary coalition of women’s groups and women’s committees from unions and churches. Pretty much every feminist group in the country was a member and there were many differences. Lee represented Rape Relief one of the most radical groups.

Fred Hahn is under attack. The Canadian Union of Public Employees National Executive has asked him to resign as Vice-President over a video he posted on X. This is an outrageous attack on the most effective and consistent labour leader I have ever known, and I’ve known quite a few. As President of CUPE Ontario, he is present at every picket line, every protest of any significance on a range of struggles from Palestine to pro-choice.

About two weeks after October 7, I had a strong feeling that the movement in solidarity with Palestine was looking a lot like the youth uprising in the 1960’s. Today after the police assault on the students at Columbia and across the country, there is no doubt. I guess after 56 years, the powers that be have forgotten the lessons. I moved to New York and got a job working in a disability centre at Columbia University in the fall of 1968.

The current Ontario government tabled its sixth annual budget yesterday. Here’s the state of the province today:Tent cities are the new normal in many of our municipalities. Food bank use is at record levels. More than two million people have no family doctor. The province needs at least 24,000 more nurses. Court cases, even those involving assaults, are being thrown out because the lack of staff is causing unacceptable delays. More than a quarter of schools report daily teacher shortages.
