    Project GREEN’s annual open garden weekend is Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29. They have 22 gardens to show from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday and again from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are not required, but you will want to pick up a map at one of the generous businesses that sponsor these two days of great garden walks.

    If you have 12 young grandchildren who all want to visit your house at the same time, how do you keep them entertained? Karol and Phil Miller know. First, you build swing sets, perhaps a daybed swing that seats six or more, and a fire pit for many nights of making s’mores, plus gardens that feature angels, toads, butterflies, snails, turtles, and fairy figurines. When the Millers bought their home 10 years ago, there was very little shade.

    Poppy seeds, long dormant on the battlefields in Belgium and France, bloomed unexpectedly alongside the crosses and inspired a soldier, John McRae, more than a hundred years ago, to write a poem with words that still resonate with us today. Poppies grow well in the Midwest and often by now are showing their colors. The red poppy, called the Flanders poppy, is just one of the many colors.

    Two of my favorite flowering trees, and perhaps yours, too, are the redbud and lilacs. Both are just finishing their springtime show now and will concentrate on producing leaves, deepening their roots, and literally branching out. Redbuds have beautiful pinkish-purple blossoms that thickly cover the tree and make it stand out next to its neighbors' still-bare branches. Becky Sladek had some questions about her two-year-old Eastern Redbud tree.
