    Wilkes and Iredell county officials met with presiding officials of the Wilkes-Iredell Volunteer Fire Department Wednesday as part of an investigation into allegations regarding the department, said Major Logan Kerr of the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office in a press release. Kerr said he and Wilkes Fire Marshal Chris Hicks, Iredell Fire Marshal David Souther and officials from Wilkes and Iredell Emergency Management and Wilkes Emergency Medical Services attended the meeting Wednesday.

    Caldwell County is expected to be included in center stage when Brood XIV of the 17-year cicadas arrives in a few weeks. The N.C. Cooperative Extension Service and the website, “Cicada Mania” (www.cicadamania.com), said cicada nymphs of this brood will likely start emerging from the ground in late April or early May in Caldwell, Wilkes, Burke, Catawba, Henderson, McDowell, Buncombe and Mitchell counties and possibly elsewhere in this region.

    After mostly missing out on the show when Brood XIX (19) of the 17-year periodical cicadas emerged in parts of North Carolina in 2024, Wilkes County is expected to be included in center stage when Brood XIV (14) arrives this spring. The N.C. Cooperative Extension Service said cicada nymphs of this brood will likely start emerging from the ground in late April or early May in several western North Carolina counties, including Wilkes.

    A man is being credited with saving his mother’s life when a fire broke out in their mobile home on Dehart Church Road in the Dehart section of Hays on the afternoon of March 29. Chris Brown said he was in his bedroom when he heard popping and cracking sounds coming from his brother’s adjacent bedroom, opened the door and encountered intense flames that caused first and second degree burns to his head.
