On Tuesday morning this week the Advocate questioned when the decision was made to hire “special counsel” to represent the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) in negotiations with SCOR over the rec center. Commissioner John Fryar told the Advocate that they had discussed the issue in an Executive Session. The Advocate questioned this when was this announcement was made and promised to look into it.

Just six months after being sworn into office last November, residents Mitch and Alexis Petsch of Julesburg, have secured a petition to recall Sedgwick County Sheriff Koby Quayle from office. Aledging charges of abuse of authority and intimidation, they state Quayle has failed to follow legal protocols, refused to adhere to proper conduct, and used his position to stalk and intimidate witnesses.

The end is approaching for the last surviving tree within the initial two blocks of Cedar Street in Julesburg. As recently as 10 to 15 years ago, trees lined the downtown business area. The earliest of these were planted before 1992—possibly around a decade earlier, according to former town manager Allen Coyne. He mentioned that the intention was to replace them every 20 to 25 years, but due to a lack of interest in replanting, they were ultimately removed between 2010 and 2015.

Thomas Ortiz spent years waiting on a kidney. Turns out, he was living with a matched donor – his wife Nikky. Sedgwick County department heads were alerted early Wednesday morning of a possible incident involving the County’s human resources and payroll program, Isolved.
