真田広之が「SＨＯＧＵＮ 将軍」でこだわったのは正しさだった。 「時として（ハリウッドは）我々の文化を誤解する」。日本有数の映画スターはＣＮＮにそう語った。「だからこの世界を正しく紹介したかった」 ジェームズ・クラベルのベストセラー小説「将軍」（１９７５年）を原作として、ＦＸがドラマ化したミニシリーズ。真田は戦国武将の吉井虎永を演じる。 壮大な時代劇の舞台は１６００年、戦国時代の日本。虎永（徳川家康がモデル）は結集する敵勢力を前に、命をかけて戦う。真田は虎永の性格を謎めいた戦略家と形容し、「同時に人間であり家庭人でもある。ステレオタイプのサムライではない」とした。 ６３歳の真田は役者として６０年近いキャリアを持つ。だがプロデューサーを務めるのは初めてだった。この機会を利用して制作や衣装、ヘアメイク、さらには「所作の達人」に至るまで、時代劇の専門スタッフを起用し、欧米人のスタッフと一緒になって、本物に根差す世界を綿密に作り上げた。 各部門にはそれぞれ日本人コンサルタントを配置し、真田の言う「シェークスピア日本語」の台詞（せりふ）回しは自らが若手俳優を指導した。...
