This year celebrates the 40th anniversary of my very favorite horror movie of all time: A Nightmare on Elm Street. A movie that took horror to a new level, thanks to the brilliant Wes Craven, who floods the film with layers of subtext, beautiful imagery, universal fears, a legendary villain and my favorite Final Girl in cinema.

I got to go to David Lynch’s house once. As a die hard Twin Peaks fan for many years, and someone who admires his work as a filmmaker as something truly unique and magical, it was an unbelievable moment. I was working for the New Beverly Cinema and I went to pick up a 35mm print of Eraserhead that we were going to be showing. The thrill of driving up into the Hollywood Hills and seeing his house was palpable.
My Rocky Horror Picture Show Obsession

I first saw Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight with a live shadow cast when I was 12. Now, some may say that is far too young to see said movie, and to that I agree, but I also wouldn’t have it any other way. It was truly a life-changing experience, and one that created a lifelong love affair with the film. I grew up in Las Vegas (which probably explains why they would allow a 12-year-old in) and there was a movie theater nearby that played Rocky Horror every Saturday at midnight.

The first VHS I ever owned was Who Framed Roger Rabbit, bought for me for Christmas the year it came out – 1988 – and it still plays perfectly. That is what I love about VHS – you could have paused a tape in 1993, and when you come back to it now, it’s held your place for you! You can pick up exactly where you left off.

My motto: every movie is better with a dance number. Now, not every movie needs a dance number, but I think every film that has one is always greatly improved by it. Naturally, I’m a big lover of movie musicals, but I always like it when non-musicals slip one in – I was digging Ex Machina, then the dance number came in and I was ON BOARD. (500) Days of Summer, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pulp Fiction and so many more films have a moment of musical delight that brings me joy.
