Introduction The abundant-center hypothesis (ACH; Brown 1984) is a foundational macroecology theory. The ACH predicts that the abundance of a species is greatest in the center of its geographic range where habitat is the most suitable and decreases towards the range edges due to decreased fitness associated with declining habitat suitability (Fig. 1A, Brown, 1984, Brown et al. 1995).

Although past work has focused on stream drying characteristics, there has been less focus on how hydrology, ecology and biogeochemistry respond and interact during stream wetting.

Sales of undomesticated ornamental or pet species (henceforth, pet trade) have similarly expanded beyond “brick-and-mortar” retail stores to include a rapidly growing number of online retailers and marketplaces (Liu et al., 2021; Marshall et al., 2020; Siriwat & Nijman, 2020).
