Sherfane Rutherford marked his international return with a dashing 70 before Gudakesh Motie made a fine fifty of his own as the West Indies fought hard to avoid a one-day series whitewash against England at the Oval on Tuesday. In a match reduced by rain to 40 overs per side, the tourists finished on 251-9, having slumped to 121-6 after veteran leg-spinner Adil Rashid (3-40) took three wickets in quick succession.

England vice-captain Ollie Pope may have done his short-term prospects no harm with a Test century against Zimbabwe but the Surrey batsman now wants to show he can score runs against the very best bowlers in world cricket. Pope's dominant 171 was the highest of three individual centuries in an England total of 565-6 declared that paved the way for an innings win over an outgunned Zimbabwe inside three days at Trent Bridge.

England launched their home season with an innings and 45-run thrashing of Zimbabwe in a one-off Test at Trent Bridge on Saturday. A match scheduled for four days was all over before tea on the third, with England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir taking a Test-best 6-81 after Zimbabwe were made to follow-on. But what is the importance of such a result for England ahead of the sterner challenges that surely await them in an upcoming five-Test series with cricket powerhouse India?

The African nation's first Test in England for 22 years ended with Zimbabwe suffering an innings and 45-run thrashing at Trent Bridge on Saturday. This match had only been scheduled for a maximum of four days, rather than the standard five for a Test, yet England still wrapped up victory before tea on the third.

First met @reverse_sweeper in an indoor net in Nottingham long ago. Obvious then he'd played at a high club level, had a dry wit and was an intellectual - Deleuze and Guattari his thing - qualities in his writing. Sequels are hard but, as per Godfather II, sure this is a corker.
