Father and sons team Jeff, Trevor, and Cameron Alcorn have been brewing beer in their basement for fun for over a decade. But, in late 2024, three of their brews appeared on grocery store shelves in Wisconsin—the culmination of a lengthy process in their desire to bring their beer to the commercial scene. In late 2024, I was able to visit their “research and design” brewery at Jeff’s family home in Wisconsin.

I was recently examining an old school bus for purchase in the hopes of completing its conversion into a rustic motorhome. Unfortunately, this specimen was not in good repair; a lot of shoddy work was apparent—apparent to me, that is, after a mechanic friend started pointing it out. Various fixtures were messily welded onto the frame of the bus, or inconveniently placed, or broken.

Images: The Cenacle Press at Silverstream Priory / cenaclepress.com)One of my favorite spiritual authors is the Benedictine writer Dom Hubert van Zeller (1905-84). His simultaneous humor and realism, along with brevity, make his work refreshing and accessible.

The tree swayed in the dark as I eased myself down onto the rickety hunter’s seat. Sitting on this little grating, swaying 30 feet above the ground, with dry leaves and winter wind swirling around me, I did not feel very secure. I waited for the darkness to turn to dawn. My friend looked one way down the clearing, I the other. Trees began to appear like streaks of charcoal against the snow. I pinched my companion’s leg, drawing his attention to a deer that had appeared between the trees.

Recipe for John’s Salami & Hot Honey Sandwich included below! It’s 6 am, and as thoughts of yeast ratios and rising times flit through his head, John Gassner lifts weights in the gym.
