The election of Robert Francis Prevost, who chose the name Leo XIV, as the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church marks two historic firsts. Leo is the first-ever U.S.-born pope to lead the church and the first pope from the Augustinian order. On Thursday, the new pope appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica and delivered a short speech.

Updated April 25, 2025 at 15:17 PM ETLuigi Mangione, who is facing the death penalty for the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has pleaded not guilty to four federal charges. Mangione appeared in federal court in Manhattan on Friday afternoon for an arraignment. The day before, the Department of Justice announced its intention to seek the death penalty, arguing that the fatal shooting was intentional and premeditated. Thompson was shot down outside a Manhattan hotel on Dec. 4.
