1 Introduction Understanding and managing human-natural systems confronting change remains an open challenge, as they are highly complex systems with deep uncertainties shaping their candidate futures (Elsawah et al., 2020; Reed et al., 2022; Schlüter et al., 2012). The interactions and feedbacks between human and natural components, resources, actors, and institutions create nested systems-of-systems that operate at and across multiple scales (Iwanaga et al., 2021).
