A controversial high-rise development in Stittsville has received the green light from Ottawa’s planning committee, despite opposition from many residents and the local councillor, who say the area lacks the infrastructure to support it. “My concern is really around the transportation infrastructure and other amenities that are lagging behind due to all the growth we’re seeing,” Stittsville Coun. Glen Gower told Capital Current after the committee meeting on Wednesday.

Last week I went to pick my son up from a friend’s house and he said he was hungry. It was well past dinnertime, but I decided to stop at a new local pizza shop I heard had just opened up on Commercial Street. Called Paisanos Slice Shop, we grabbed an assortment of pizza slices from what was left in the window as they were about to close for the night and then headed to the car. My son tried it first — as a teenage boy who is interested in cooking and food he’s something of a pizza aficionado.

After noticing the correlation between stormwater run-off and the dramatic deaths of coho salmon, researchers scored a major win when they discovered the toxic chemical responsible — 6PPD-Quinone, or 6PPD-Q. The “coho killer,” as it’s become known, is a byproduct of a chemical added to car tires to prevent wear and cracking and its role in rapid salmon deaths after traveling from roadway runoff into freshwater streams  was published in a groundbreaking 2020 paper in Science.

The treaty-protected sxwayxum village site in downtown “Nanaimo” will be returned to Snuneymuxw First Nation, the province announced this week.  The “B.C.” government and Snuneymuxw acquired the lots currently occupied by the old Howard Johnson hotel, a 2.67-hectare property near the waterfront, for $28.5 million.  Of that amount, nearly $26 million was contributed by the province, “with the explicit purpose of returning it to Snuneymuxw for redevelopment,” according to a July 15 release.
