The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has urged participating tax authorities around the globe to take further steps to ensure compliance with the Common Reporting Standard (CRS). As a result Financial Institutions have seen an increase in notices and other inquiries as tax authorities seek to enforce the CRS. As scrutiny increases on CRS compliance, Bermuda Financial Institutions must prepare and have a governance framework in place.

From an examination of gender and sexuality in medieval natural histories to a historical look at a borderland province in WWII Eastern Europe, this year’s Society for the Humanities fellows are working on projects that touch on the focal theme of “Crossing.”The Society’s upcoming fall conference on Friday, Oct. 27, will feature talks by seven of these multidisciplinary fellows. Free and open to the public, the conference will be held at the A.D. White House.

Network engineer-turned-professor of English Tung-Hui Hu will offer insight into the rapidly expanding field of the digital humanities as this year’s Digital Humanities Lecturer. His talk, “The Grid vs. the Set: Early Attempts at Classifying Data,” will be on Wednesday, October 18, at 5 p.m. in the A.D. White House’s Guerlac Room. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception. Registration is not required.

Data Privacy Week was an opportune time to consider the important issue of how we as a society determine when privacy takes precedence in conflicts between data access and data privacy. A recent such example was the November 2022 decision by the European Union Court of Justice that invalidated a provision in the EU anti-money-laundering directive whereby companies’ beneficial ownership information was to be made accessible in all cases to any member of the general public.
