Duckie & Snaps: We Cannot Be FriendsThis tale, a series kickoff, begins when a duck egg plops into a crocodile nest, and a duckling hatches simultaneously with a baby croc. But Duckie, who sports a bright pink bow right out of the shell, is no ordinary bird. “I’m HERE!” the duckling announces, and immediately plans to befriend its nestmate, whom it dubs “Snaps.” Not so fast: “We. EAT. Duckies!” interjects an adult croc wearing a bow tie (“FRIED DUCKIE, DUCKIE SMOOTHIE, DUCKIE PIE”).

You walk down the street and every bird, every dog, every odd-colored car seems like they could be the star of a picture book. I love this. Yes, the sparrow, the puggle, and the car the color of pineapple juice are there every day, but there is magic in suddenly seeing ideas, and seeing that they are everywhere.

I’m sure I say some things in this video that aren’t applicable. But maybe also they are applicable to you. My point is that you don’t have to be on social media if you don’t want to. And if you do want to, you’re allowed to be on there! Either is fine, as long as it’s what you want.

I love writing. I understand the concept of Dorothy Parker’s “I hate writing. I love having written” (and I love having written, too) but I really, truly love making up characters and putting words in their mouths and feelings in their hearts. So why have I been avoiding it so much lately? It’s not just me. My writer friends tell me they are feeling it too. Either the words themselves are hard or there are other tasks that take priority.

I went to the Prospect Park Zoo with Ruth Chan and my daughter Zuzu and there are free-range peacocks (or, as Zuzu called them “loose birds”) and this one peacocked all over the place at us.

The rambling of today’s video made more sense in my head when I was recording it, and I’m not going to redo it because I’m no longer dogsitting for our friend’s enormous great dane mix. Nor could I plausibly recreate the moment when I trip a little over a very large shovel. What I was trying to say was this: I spent a lot of time waiting for a video editing program to work very slowly, and thought that was the way things had to be. But in fact I was able to solve the problem.
