    I vividly remember reading my first Alice Munro. As a Canadian Studies major, I’d been assigned to read a short story of hers; a rite of passage for any CanLit nerd. “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” knocked my socks off. The writing was so beautiful, the characters so rich and then that gut punch of an ending. It sparked a lifelong love of short stories for me. Throughout her long career as a writer, she only wrote one novel.

I had written a personal essay about an experience of sexual assault and was immediately bombarded with hate messages. People called for me to be hanged, beaten in the town square and sterilized. Online harassment has gotten exponentially worse in the last decade or so, especially for women.
