The Fiat 600 is a compromise between a city car and a small family SUV, writes Julie MarshallThe Fiat 600 is a nice-looking car with a good selection of engines. There’s a fully-electric, battery version called the 600e and two hybrids the 100 and the 136. Bigger than a 500 and eminently more practical, it is a good compromise between a city car and a small family SUV. When it was launched it marked Fiat’s return to the B-segment.

Julie Marshall drives the futuristic-looking Toyota C-HR plug-in hybridIf you want a car that stands out from the pack then the C-HR, Toyota’s stylish small SUV really does fit the bill. It has sharp angles and creases, a futuristic design and a striking paint job (especially in the mid-spec GR Sport trim we tested). Toyota dubs it a “concept car for the road” and I can see why they say that. Judge Dredd would feel right at home.

But it is certainly appropriate in this case. With over eight generations and 37 million sold, it is not surprising it is the biggest-selling model in Volkswagen's history to date. The Golf in all its guises is an easy car to live with.

Honda’s family-sized CR-V is a great all-rounder, says Julie MarshallThe new, sixth generation Honda CR-V is available as either a full hybrid or a petrol plug-in hybrid. It depends very much on your lifestyle as to which one you opt for. The plug-in hybrid (e:PHEV) gives up to 50 miles of electric driving before the ICE kicks in but, of course you need the infrastructure to charge it up.

Volkswagen may have some tough decisions to make but the Golf is riding highGerman automotive giant Volkswagen has been in the news over the past couple of weeks, not for the right reasons. The company announced earlier this month that to remain competitive it is considering closing some of its German factories for the first time in its 87-year history. This is obviously not good news.

Nineteen years ago, Ed Faulkner, lead singer with Beautiful South tribute band Beautiful Couch came off the stage at the Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool and had a eureka moment. He decided there and then he would put on a festival dedicated solely to tribute acts and hastily scribbled a few ideas on the back of the proverbial ‘cig packet’. The idea gained momentum and so, in 2007 a few hundred music lovers gathered in a rain-sodden field in Driffield and the magic of Tribfest was born.
