At this time of year, images of reindeer are everywhere. I’ve had a soft spot for reindeer ever since I was a little girl. Doesn’t everyone? While I work on Australian mammals, especially marsupials such as wombats, I still find reindeer fascinating. I’ve spent a great deal of time reading up about reindeer. Some of the research may interest you too.

Australia is unique in its endemic mammal fauna and has extant members of all three groups. The short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) and platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) are egg-laying mammals. Placental mammals are represented by cetaceans, pinnipeds, bats and over 50 species of native rodents. Australia also has more than 330 species of marsupials. Unfortunately, around half of the world’s mammal extinctions have occurred in Australia.

Wombats are native Australian marsupials. There are three species – the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii), southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) and bare-nosed wombat (Vombatus ursinus). They are important ecological engineers as their burrowing supports aeration and turnover of the soil and provides shelter for other species. Interestingly, wombats have continuously growing teeth, needed to breakdown the tough vegetation they consume.
